Professional and Personal profile
Dr Bloomfield was born in Zimbabwe, and obtained his primary medical qualification from the Godfrey Huggins School of Medicine, Harare, in 1983. He served his internship year at Witbank Provincial Hospital in 1984. From 1985 to 1987, Dr Bloomfield was Medical Officer to Rand Mines at ERPM Mine Hospital, Boksburg.
After leaving Rand Mines, Dr Bloomfield completed his orthopaedic specialist training in South Africa; being certified as a Fellow of the College of Medicine in 1993. Dr Bloomfield spent the following year on overseas attachments, including substantive Registrar posts at the Princess Elizabeth Orthopaedic Hospital in Exeter and Southampton General Hospital. Both in the UK.
Between 1994 and 1995, Dr Bloomfield worked at Ga Rankuwa Tertiary Hospital near Pretoria, as Head of the Orthopaedic Department’s Joint Reconstruction and Arthroplasty Unit.
Dr Bloomfield was appointed Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon to Ashford & St Peters NHS Trust, at Chertsey, Surrey in England in 1996. He was Clinical Director of the Trauma & Orthopaedic Department from 2002 to 2006. He simultaneously ran a private practice based at BMI the Princess Margaret Hospital in Windsor, Berkshire.
Dr Bloomfield spent a year in New Zealand on a working sabbatical in 2010. He returned to England as Medical Director of the NHS Sussex Orthopaedic Treatment Centre at Haywards Heath. When this contract ended, Dr Bloomfield spent a year at University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire, followed by just over 6 months in the Caribbean. (Bougainvillea Clinic, Tortola, British Virgin Islands).
After many years of travelling, Dr and Mrs Susan Bloomfield have returned home to Southern Africa, and look forward to staying put!
